Tonsillectomy in IgA Nephropathy Patient
Jeon Ji-Min

Abstract
IgA nephropathy is the most common form of primary glomerular disease causing end-stage renal disease(ESRD) in South Korea. A 19-year-old female patient was admitted to our hospital for tonsillectomy because of repetitive tonsillitis followed by gross hematuria. She was diagnosed as IgA nephropathy(Haas subclass I) at the age of sixteen. On admission, Urinalysis revealed SG (1.030), blood (10-20/high-power field, HPF), protein (++) and WBC (3-5/HPF), and albumin/creatinine ratio was 652 mg/g creatinine. The patient underwent a tonsillectomy. The pathological diagnosis of the resected tonsils was chronic hypertrophic tonsillitis. After tonsillectomy, a relapse of repetitive tonsillitis followed by gross hematuria was not observed and proteinuria has decreased. After eight months, urinalysis revealed SG (1.025), blood (5-10/HPF), protein (-) and WBC (0-3/HPF), and albumin/creatinine ratio was 45.8 mg/g creatinine. The result of this case indicated that tonsillectomy may had a favorable effect on clinical remission in patients with IgA nephropathy.
